About Us – The Story of Jake’s 3D
Going Way Back
Roger and Kevin became friends while they were attending college in Chicago in the early 1990’s. Kevin worked in Chicago for a while, but when his job got shipped to Atlanta, he decided to move back to the state of Washington. Roger stayed and worked in Chicago for several years. in 2017, Roger’s job was coming to an end, and he was looking for a new one. Kevin offered him to move out and manage his seafood store, ‘Seafood Connection’ in Westport, Washington. Roger accepted and started working in March of 2017. Kevin continued to run his commercial fishing boat, catching salmon, crab, and albacore tuna.
Roger and Kevin had a mutual friend who was a 3D artist. They were amazed at the image quality, and decided to work with him and to make some custom 3D images that they could sell at the seafood store. They started with a couple different Dungeness crab prints and added a print of a fisherman landing an albacore tuna.
Starting a New Business
Kevin planned to sell the seafood store, and it worked out well, because Roger was ready to be done running it. They formed a new business together: Captain Jake’s Inc.
(Flashback to 2011): The inspiration for the business name came in 2011 when Kevin had come in from an albacore tuna trip to make a boat repair and get more bait. Since he had been gone for a while, the family came out to the boat for a visit. The backward slanting captain’s chair was a good spot for Jake. The family referred to him as ‘Captain Jake’ and snapped a picture of him.
Focusing on two Products
The new business focused on two primary products: 3D art and premium canned albacore tuna. Kevin already had a retail site up and running, https://CannedAlbacoreTuna.com where he sells locally (Washington/Oregon) caught premium canned seafood products and soups. With Captain Jake’s Inc. now formed, Roger and Kevin could focus on marketing the albacore wholesale to grocery stores as well. The list of stores is growing, primarily on the Washington and Oregon coasts. People in these areas know just how much better these locally caught albacore are compared to supermarket fish.
The other part of the business they decided to grow was 3D. The 3D business started with doing 12 x 16 prints, and then expanded into 3D postcards, 3D bookmarks, and more. In 2023, Jake’s 3D added Christmas cards to their product line. New products and designs are being added fairly regularly, and the list of stores is growing steadily.
Custom 3D Products
One of the main inspirations for deciding what 3D images to create next is our customers. In certain areas, store owners will tell us about an iconic site that would sell well and make a good 3D postcard. Other times, we just come up with good ideas ourselves.
